What they don’t tell you about pregnancy: Sausage Fingers

So, it happened.  I woke up this morning with the dreaded SAUSAGE FINGERS!  I’m not entirely sure why… maybe I didn’t drink enough water yesterday, maybe it was the pizza I ate last night before bed or maybe I just slept wrong.  Who knows?  All I know is that I woke up this morning and could barely bend my fingers they has swelled up so much!

Why doesn’t anybody tell you about sausage fingers?  They do, kind of.  Generally pregnant women are warned about swelling during pregnancy, but aren’t usually told about the joys of super swollen fingers.  There are three main places where swelling occurs during pregnancy: your lower legs (cankles), your face (giant-nose syndrome) and your fingers.  Most first time mamas don’t realize how much their fingers have swollen until they are attempting to butter up their fingers to get their rings off.  I recommend removing all rings prior to the end of your second trimester, so you aren’t panicking wondering if you are going to have to get your wedding ring cut off!  If you would like to still wear your wedding ring, I suggest getting a matching chain and wearing it around your neck (kind of brings you back to High School, huh?).

During pregnancy, your feet can swell up an entire shoe size and a half!  My first pregnancy I was due in the middle of winter, so I purchased a cheap pair of larger shoes to get me through.  This time around I’m due in the middle of the summer, so I’m planning on sandals and bare feet (yes, I will be barefoot and pregnant). Keep in mind that your feet don’t necessarily go back to normal right after you have the baby… or possibly ever.  Mine eventually did, but I’ve heard of moms whose feet were permanently one size bigger!

My sister-in-law’s first comment to me when I told her I was pregnant again was “Does this mean I get to see your nose get huge again?”.  She was really excited to see my nose spread across my entire face…. Usually this facial swelling is a sign of preeclampsia, but I have been lucky enough to avoid that so far.  I just end up with a giant nose and a distorted clown face!  Don’t worry if this happens to you, it will go back to normal.  Eventually.  My face wasn’t completely back to normal until my son was one year old!

What causes swelling during pregnancy?

  • Retaining water

  • Pressure on Veins in legs from Uterus

  • Preeclampsia

  • Blood Clots

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What can I do to avoid/reduce swelling?

  • Drink more Water

  • Increase potassium intake

  • Decrease sodium

  • Decrease Caffeine

  • Get off of your feet

  • Cool off

  • Cut back on the hours you work, if possible

  • Invest in support socks

  • Massage the swollen area

  • Ice the swollen area

  • Wear comfy shoes

  • Don’t cross your legs

  • Exercise

If you are concerned about your swelling, please discuss it with your doctor.  Although some during pregnancy is perfectly normal, swelling during pregnancy can be a sign of a serious health condition.

  1. Oh that SUCKS!!! Hope everything is fine with you though health wise?

    • For the most part! It just seems like this pregnancy has been much more complicated though! One thing after another…. although my last pregnancy I had to have major surgery in the middle, but for some reason this one seems worse!

  2. Ha! Great! My wife loved this. Thank you.
